Summary

Jamie Goldberg is cool with volunteering for his local state candidate - as long as he’s behind the scenes。 There’s no way he’d ever knock on doors to ask people for their votes…until he meets Maya。

Maya Rehman’s having the worst Ramadan ever。 Her best friend is too busy to hang out, her summer trip is cancelled, her parents are separating and now her mother thinks the solution to her problems is political canvassing - with some awkward guy she hardly knows 。。。

Going door to door isn’t exactly glamorous, but maybe it’s not the worst thing in the world。 After all, the polls are getting closer - and so are Maya and Jamie。 Mastering local activism is one thing。 Navigating the cross-cultural crush of the century is another thing entirely。

This book is literally the sweetest friends to lovers book I’ve ever read🥺❤️Jamie and Maya slowly realizing they love each other is just AHHHHHHHHHH MY HEART❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️And they both have the office as they favorite show, JUST LIKE ME。 Oh my god I just realized…。 THEY ARE JIM AND PAM。 AHHHHH MY GODWhen they spent 8 hours and 25 minutes talking in the phone, or more like 3 hours because they both fell asleep while watching the office🥺🥺I also loved how they knew eachother when they were little, and This book is literally the sweetest friends to lovers book I’ve ever read🥺❤️Jamie and Maya slowly realizing they love each other is just AHHHHHHHHHH MY HEART❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️And they both have the office as they favorite show, JUST LIKE ME。 Oh my god I just realized…。 THEY ARE JIM AND PAM。 AHHHHH MY GODWhen they spent 8 hours and 25 minutes talking in the phone, or more like 3 hours because they both fell asleep while watching the office🥺🥺I also loved how they knew eachother when they were little, and how they reunited at Target。 And he destroyed the tangelo tower。 My god just from that moment I knew he had a things for her。 When he confessed his love to Maya, and they BOTH freaked out I could not stop smiling。 But then they did not talk together after that and they had this awkwardness between them。 But they had so many cute and heartfelt moments together。 When Sara blew Maya off and the first one she went to was Jamie。 He took care of her and was so sweet🥺 When they went on all the target trips and all the time they spent knocking on doors and that just became almost a daily ritual。 And when they watched the office together over at Jamie’s house and watched the most romantic episode if the show ‘Casino night’, and she rested her head on his shoulder, and he put his arm around her, OH MY GOOOOOOD😩❤️🥰 Jamie’s friends are so funny bc they’ve always shipped Jamie with Maya because they could take one look at him and just KNOW he liked her。 When they went viral it was so fun, but then the ending came and other things happened and they broke of their contact, but as I said got back together🥺 but all the comments, I could not agree more tbh🤭Just, hands down, I LOVED THIS 。。。more

i enjoyed this。 it was an easy read and it did exactly what it stated on the tin, it was a cute YA romance。 even tho the plot is based around politics, it didn’t feel complicated… but it did make me mad as hell because people are fucking horrible when it comes to basic human rights。 i wasn’t sure how it would tackle a mixed race couple because sometimes they can come off as white saviour-y, especially in these kinds of stories where race and religion is a big part of the plot, but i thought it h i enjoyed this。 it was an easy read and it did exactly what it stated on the tin, it was a cute YA romance。 even tho the plot is based around politics, it didn’t feel complicated… but it did make me mad as hell because people are fucking horrible when it comes to basic human rights。 i wasn’t sure how it would tackle a mixed race couple because sometimes they can come off as white saviour-y, especially in these kinds of stories where race and religion is a big part of the plot, but i thought it handled it well。 。。。more

Becky Albertalli has always had my heart and now she and Aisha Saeed have it even more。 This book had both Jewish and Muslim representation and both Jamie and Maya were so incredibly important and heartfelt。 I'm not usually into politics, but it was so important for teens to understand that their voices can be heard。 Albertalli and Saeed made this issues relevant and present to the story without taking away the fun of a YA contemporary/rom-com。 This book was sweet and quirky while also being so Becky Albertalli has always had my heart and now she and Aisha Saeed have it even more。 This book had both Jewish and Muslim representation and both Jamie and Maya were so incredibly important and heartfelt。 I'm not usually into politics, but it was so important for teens to understand that their voices can be heard。 Albertalli and Saeed made this issues relevant and present to the story without taking away the fun of a YA contemporary/rom-com。 This book was sweet and quirky while also being so real and important especially in the world we live in。 While important real-world issues were brought up, the book still felt happy to me and I didn't feel overwhelmed, but rather empowered。 I'm not surprised, the religious and cultural rep is present as well as the LGBTQ+ rep。 Albertalli truly nails that every time。 Overall, I laughed, definitely teared up a few times and really wholeheartedly loved this story。 。。。more

Fluff。 Trying to do more than it realistically can。 Enjoyable, light fluff。 Problematic for a number of reasons, but the political stuff is not one of them。 More along the lines of Muslim/Pakistani representation (read one of the many reviews written by Muslim or Pakistani women instead of listening to me, another white woman)。

A little slow going but worth sticking with it。

I really did like this book some elements were a bit too much for me but I loved the romance and the story outside of the political elements。 I really liked the characters especially Jamie and Maya I loved the gradual romance between them I also loved how well they mixed with the people around them。 I also loved other characters like Jamie's Grandma his sister Sophie also Maya's Dad and Mom there were so many great characters that made up for certain issues I found with the story。 I loved Maya f I really did like this book some elements were a bit too much for me but I loved the romance and the story outside of the political elements。 I really liked the characters especially Jamie and Maya I loved the gradual romance between them I also loved how well they mixed with the people around them。 I also loved other characters like Jamie's Grandma his sister Sophie also Maya's Dad and Mom there were so many great characters that made up for certain issues I found with the story。 I loved Maya for her strength of character and sticking up for what she believes in that made her a character worth reading about。 I loved Jamie for how genuine he was he was a really well written character to read about。 I liked most of the story it starts with something awkward happening to Jamie it goes on to be a political campaign that all of the characters are trying to do things for this is how Maya and Jamie meet again and slowly fall for one another other things happen a detestable bill more political stuff things happen they fight they meet back up not long after and kiss the political stuff ends and there is a happy ending for the two of them。 。。。more

Didn’t really get into it as much as I wanted to。 I feel like it is a little bit overhyped。 Simply feels like a way to explain how politics work in the United States and how faulty the whole system is to young readers and it was just made me feel like it was being explained to me as if I was 5 years old

I was very apprehensive to read this book due to the main characters being a Muslim girl and a Jewish boy, but the representation of both religions and how they can put aside past conflict to work together to fight for what they believe in was quite different to read。

While I liked this book a lot, it did have some real problem areas。 I liked that it revolved around current politics and issues。 The story depicted how local elections and politics affect real people, and how young people, who cannot yet vote, can get involved and try to help make the world a better place。 I also liked that the political elements of the book were not made into a fairy tale, and it's not necessarily happily ever after。 On the other hand, the characters' religious identities were While I liked this book a lot, it did have some real problem areas。 I liked that it revolved around current politics and issues。 The story depicted how local elections and politics affect real people, and how young people, who cannot yet vote, can get involved and try to help make the world a better place。 I also liked that the political elements of the book were not made into a fairy tale, and it's not necessarily happily ever after。 On the other hand, the characters' religious identities were supposed to be a big part of who they are, and yet they were very thinly depicted。 A deeper exploration of identity, what it means to be Jewish, what it means to be Muslim, would have lent the characters depth that was missing。 Outward rituals like fasting on Ramadan and celebrating a Bat Mitzvah are significant themes, and yet the inner meanings of ritual, faith, and community are brushed over。 And that allows for a romance to flair, of course。 It would be nice to see characters who take their faith more seriously。 It would be nice to see a book where interfaith dating is not the happily every after; something that shows that characters can take interfaith and interracial friendships seriously without being accused as being racist for not wanting to date (or marry) someone who does not share the same faith and background。 。。。more

Felt like tokenism to me。 Token anxiety, token gay friends mentioned in passing, token minority religious representation that only goes skin-deep with the main characters (or it's tell, not show), token interracial relationship。。。 there wasn't really any cultural differentiation just talk of bat mitzvahs and Ramadan。 If anything, what sets this book apart is that this it has a one-sided political perspective—I happen to know and love people of various political persuasions and so that wasn't wha Felt like tokenism to me。 Token anxiety, token gay friends mentioned in passing, token minority religious representation that only goes skin-deep with the main characters (or it's tell, not show), token interracial relationship。。。 there wasn't really any cultural differentiation just talk of bat mitzvahs and Ramadan。 If anything, what sets this book apart is that this it has a one-sided political perspective—I happen to know and love people of various political persuasions and so that wasn't what I was looking for in this kind of a read。 Moving on。。。 。。。more

I really liked seeing teens portrayed as smart, politically minded people with passions aligning with their beliefs。 I also admired Jamie and Maya's relationship developed over the course of the book, not your typical teen romance which made the book very enjoyable。 Book club choice with lots to discuss。 I really liked seeing teens portrayed as smart, politically minded people with passions aligning with their beliefs。 I also admired Jamie and Maya's relationship developed over the course of the book, not your typical teen romance which made the book very enjoyable。 Book club choice with lots to discuss。 。。。more

As a non-US citizen, it surprised me that practically everything in this novel is actually based off of real events。 I can't imagine how hard it is for Muslim women in America to wake up and fear for their lives。 My heart goes to each and everyone of you。 (The same goes for all minorities who are continually oppressed and silenced by the unjust and racial system。)I like that this is specifically targeted to YA readers。 Kudos to the authors for taking the long and difficult and often taboo road o As a non-US citizen, it surprised me that practically everything in this novel is actually based off of real events。 I can't imagine how hard it is for Muslim women in America to wake up and fear for their lives。 My heart goes to each and everyone of you。 (The same goes for all minorities who are continually oppressed and silenced by the unjust and racial system。)I like that this is specifically targeted to YA readers。 Kudos to the authors for taking the long and difficult and often taboo road of children's and YA literature。However, it should be noted that there are some problematic parts that I wished that the authors could've handled better。 One major example is the troll in the parking and the video of him that went viral afterwards。 The troll was wrong, but I do not like that he was only humiliated online without actually being accountable for what he's done。 I hate cancel culture so much because it's so counterproductive。 People got humiliated and cancelled。 And then what? What good did it accomplish? Did the person change afterwards? Was he being held liable for his actions? We have to remember that trolls are not the real enemies here。 It's the oppressive system and those who uphold these prejudices and pay trolls。 Jamie's posting of the video was so unnecessary。 Jamie (especially Grandma) should've just acted matured。 They should've just asked him why he's doing what he's doing。 And they should've educated him and guided him to the right path。 When you think about it, it's what activism is all about—education (in Filipino we call this "panghahamig")。 No one was born with open eyes。 At some point in our lives, we've all been unaware how oppressive the system is。 But something or someone made us realize everything。 And it is our duty to pass on that perspective to somebody else by means of education。 Clearly, Jamie, Granda, and everybody who's there missed the point here。I don't want to compare。 But in my opinion, this novel lacks the emotional truth that The Hate U Give has。 Maybe it's because Jamie and Maya first participated in the campaigns for selfish reasons。 Maybe because Gabe was selfish and immature too。 Maybe it's because the novel veered more towards the love story rather than dramatizing the gravity of the bill。 Maybe it's because there's little to no solid grounds for Jamie's activism。Still, 3 stars for the message this novel is trying to convey。 。。。more

Ok so here is the thing。 I really liked the romance in the book。 I like how it touched on prejudice like racism, homophobia, and more。 But this book lost me with all the political BS。 Yes, I said it。 The book talks about love, not hate, and yet all it did was hate on the republicans。 I should express that I am NOT a republican。 I'm not a democrat either。 I'm independent。 And all the hate being shown from BOTH sides to BOTH sides is just ridiculous and this book is no better。 It's basically sayin Ok so here is the thing。 I really liked the romance in the book。 I like how it touched on prejudice like racism, homophobia, and more。 But this book lost me with all the political BS。 Yes, I said it。 The book talks about love, not hate, and yet all it did was hate on the republicans。 I should express that I am NOT a republican。 I'm not a democrat either。 I'm independent。 And all the hate being shown from BOTH sides to BOTH sides is just ridiculous and this book is no better。 It's basically saying that if you are a republican or if you vote republican then you are a horrible prejudiced piece of crap。 Sorry, the world isn't black and white like that。 How I choose my rating:1* Didn't like it at all。 These are rare as I usually just don't finish any book I dislike this much。2** Didn't like it。 Again usually DNF if I dislike it this much, but occasionally I feel it still has potential and I try to stick with it to the end。3*** I liked it。 It wasn't great but it was enjoyable enough。 It is unlikely I'll ever reread it but I might finish the series if it is a part of one。4**** I really liked this book。 Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining。 I might reread this at some point, and I will almost always finish the series if part of one。5***** I loved this book。 I found little to no issues with it at all。 I will probably reread this and possibly more than once。 I will definitely finish the series if it's part of one。 。。。more

Okay, so。 There were many things that I liked about this book, and in this book。 However, there were also things that I found problematic and hard to ignore。I want to start by saying that I'm neither Jewish nor Muslim, so what I have to say about accurate representation in this novel is far less important than someone actually identifying as either, and with that in mind I also won't be talking about whether the representation is accurate or not。 What I want to point out instead is how uneven th Okay, so。 There were many things that I liked about this book, and in this book。 However, there were also things that I found problematic and hard to ignore。I want to start by saying that I'm neither Jewish nor Muslim, so what I have to say about accurate representation in this novel is far less important than someone actually identifying as either, and with that in mind I also won't be talking about whether the representation is accurate or not。 What I want to point out instead is how uneven the distribution of religious content and introspection for the two main characters, Jaime and Maya, was。 Regardless of the accuracy of the representation, the fact that so much more space was given Judaism and its traditions made me feel uncertain of how to interpret the book and the romantic relationship that is developed between the main characters。I also don't like the notion that Maya's religion (Islam) is posed as an obstacle between them, and something that she will need to deal with at some point or other。 Rather than validating the choice of not dating, or being physically intimate before marriage, it's instead brushed off in a way I'm not sure feels fair to the people who do make those, indeed very valid, choices。I did for the most part appreciate the political aspects of the book, mostly because I felt as a non-American that the political discussions never went over my head, but still seemed realistic。 That is not enough for me to feel like it "made up" for what I find the book lacks, however。 It's not inherently all that bad a novel, but it doesn't bring a lot of nuance。 。。。more
